"Alpine Melody" is one of my favorite lessons that we have to play in our course book. Since the beginning of the year, everyone in the class just had to learn how to play each song from the book. Then, once we were confident about our playing, we just went up to the teacher and played it in the grand piano. Once in awhile, the teacher would call us by groups depending on where we sat. Every time we went up to play, we would get points determined on how well the song was played. Suggestions would be made to us on our mistakes.
This piece of ballad music was given to us during class as a performance of a duet. Accompanists, more intermediate students, were given different music sheets. We all were assigned an accompanist. In the following weeks, we would have to perform the duet. We were given time to practice and rehearse with our accompanist in class.
From this, I've learned that music is especially hard to play as duets. Our teacher mentioned that our listening is the most important factor that provides us with the idea of "PLAYING BY EAR".
